Volunteer Day at the Airfield

Volunteer Day at the Airfield

A special THANK YOU to the staff and nursing students of the Tooele Technical College.  They came out in full force to help us continue our restoration of the airfield’s Nurses Quarters.  For more information on Tooele Technical College and the programs they offer, visit their website: tooeletech.edu

Volunteer Day  – June 7 – 8, 2024

Wendover Museum will have a volunteer day on Friday June 7 and Saturday June 8.  You do not need to come both days to participate, most will be coming on Saturday only, but we could use additional help on Friday.  Some will get started early, but whenever you come in the morning we’ll get an assignment for you.  Lunch will be provided in the Brinkman Service Club at 1:00pm.
There will be several projects going on.  We do have a number of students coming out from a Tooele nursing program who will work on the nurse’s quarters but additional help might be needed there.  The projects are:
C-54 Aircraft — we will be applying Citri-strip stripper and painter’s plastic to help remove the old paint prior to a new WW II paint job in the scheme of the 320th Troop Carrier Squadron.
Airman’s Dining Hall — Some carpentry skills are needed here.  Put trim on doors, fit replacement siding where needed, install window screens.  Also, paint window frames, clean up weeds around the building.
B-29 ‘Enola Gay’ hangar — Clean up girder mounting wells, move orange barricades to a barracks, assemble heavy army coal stove and move to barracks 2410, sweep up door rail tracks, possible other items.
Nurse’s Quarters — Clean up weeds and small trees around the perimeter of the building, carpentry needed on entry door trim & window repair, paint trim, clean out two interior rooms, prime paint, possible finish paint if enough time.  Also carpentry on creative siding repair.
What to wear:  work shoes, no open-toed sandals/shoes, work pants & shirts, it may be chilly outside so prepare to layer, there’s no heat in the hangar, dining hall or nurse’s quarters.  For some who are willing to paint, bring clothes that can get some paint on them if your neighbor happens to turn and hits you with a paint brush!!
What to Bring:   Ideally, we’d like some hoes, wide blade mattock pick, shovel, rake.  We’ll have some of these tools including a battery powered saws-all for the small trees.  We’ll also have all the painting supplies needed.  We have a small portable table saw and chop saw.  We’ll have some caulk for the doors that need it.
If you are able to come, please email info@wendoverairfield.org so we can get an idea of how many are coming.
And if you have friends that would like to come, by all means please invite them.
Our next Volunteer Day dates are:  Aug 17th and Sep 28th.
